Department of Pharmacology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Latvia is responsible for teaching of "Second-level Professional Medicine Study Programme", "Pharmacy Bachelor and Master Study Programme", "Second-level Professional Dentistry Study Programme" and "PhD Medicine and Pharmacy Study Programme" students and for training undergraduate, graduate, PhD students and postdoctoral biomedical new scientists in preclinical research in pharmacology.

Pharmacology is an exciting area of biomedical science that studies the action of drugs and other compounds on living organisms. Its goal is to discover the cellular and molecular mechanisms of various substances and to develop new pharmacotherapeutic strategies and drugs for treatment and diagnosis of human diseases.

The current research focus at the Department of Pharmacology is on neuropharmacology. We investigate the possible neuroprotective mechanisms of action of existing drugs and new compounds in different neurodegenerative disease models. In the field of research the Department of Pharmacology is collaborating with Latvian and international institutions, carrying out various collaboration projects.
