To protect the rights, health, safety and dignity of research participants, prevent harm to research participants, society and the environment, as well as promote the reputation of the University of Latvia as a scientific institution, there is a Research Ethics Committee at the UL Faculty of Medicine for evaluating ethical aspects of scientific research done by students:

  • Assoc. Prof. Signe Mežinska - Chair of the Committee;
  • Assoc. Prof. Liliāna Civjāne - Vice-Chair of the Committee;
  • Assoc. Prof. Ainars Bajinskis - Secretary of the Committee;
  • Prof. Una Riekstiņa;
  • Lecturer Laura Vīksna;
  • Lecturer Dagnija Gulbe;
  • Student representative Līva Liepiņa.

The Committee members were approved by the UL FM Council on 24.11.2021. with Decision No. 122.

The Committee meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 3:00 PM. Submissions for consideration at the next meeting must be submitted one week before the scheduled meeting of the Committee, usually - by the third Tuesday of the month, by 17:00.

UL medical residents submit their documents for review to the UL Life and Medical Sciences Research Ethics Committee .

Documents may be submitted electronically or in hard copy:

  1. Applications signed with a (Latvian) secure electronic signature must be sent to the e-mail address etika.mf@lu.lv.
  2. Applications signed on paper may be submitted on the 1st floor of the House of Science, Jelgavas iela 3. The mailbox is located to the left of the entrance, on the way to the locker room and the cafe, with the inscription "Documents for submission to the Research Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Medicine".
